TheU.N.’srefugeeagencyreportedThursdaythatanaverageof1,SouthSudanesearriveddailyinUgandaoverthepastyear.OnemillionothersarereportedtohavegonetoSudan,Ethiopia,Kenya,theDemocraticRepublicofCongoandtheCentralAfricanRepublic.
Recentarrivalstorefugeecampshavereported“barbaricviolence”intheirhomecountry.TheysaySouthSudaneseciviliansarebeingburnedaliveintheirhomes.Theyreportofsexualattacksonwomenandgirls,andkidnappingofboyswhoarethenforcedintoarmedgroups.
SouthSudan’scivilwarbeganattheendof.Aidagenciessaytherehasbeenincreasingviolencesinceapower-sharingagreementcollapsedinJulyoflastyear.Civilianshavesufferedthemostintheconflict.
TheInternationalCommitteeoftheRedCrosssaysoneinthreepeoplelivinginSouthSudanhasbeendisplaced.ItalsosaysoneintwoSouthSudaneseisseverelyhungryandinneedoffoodassistance.
TheNewYork-basedgroupInternationalRescueCommittee,orIRC,reportsthat75percentoftheSouthSudaneserefugeesinUgandahavearrivedinthepastyear.
